Xabi Alonso has backed Fernando Torres

Xabi Alonso has backed Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres to return to the Spanish national team if he continues on the current run of form.

The forward has scored five goals in his last six games for Atletico. This is possibly his best run of form in the last five years. Ever since the World Cup 2010, he has struggled for form and the terrible spell with Chelsea appeared to have finished his international career for good. After years in the wilderness, Torres appears to be finding his confidence back. The sale of Jackson Martinez in January may have triggered the change within the forward.

Torres is no longer the impact player, but he is considered as a regular starter due to the lack of options for Diego Simeone. The 32-year-old has hit form at just the right time in the campaign. Atletico have been able to take advantage of Barcelona’s dropped points in recent weeks largely because of Torres scoring in important games. The last few weeks have been eventful for Torres as the player has picked up two yellow cards, one red card, scored five goals, and created two for his teammates in the last six matches. He has taken his league tally to nine goals for the campaign.

“If he continues at this level, he will surely have the chance to play at Euros, although Vicente [Spain coach Del Bosque] has the last word. I am happy to see him back to his best form and he looks very happy at Atletico. The fans love him and he is an idol there. He is also a great friend because of all the experiences we have lived together. But on the field we are not friends. He seems happy and well-loved, and I am glad for him,” said Alonso.
